The snowbird moving checklist for the Coachella Valley

Seasonal residents move twice a year, usually in October and April, into HOA or gated communities with their own rules. Book movers two to three weeks out, have the certificate of insurance and gate access arranged before move day, and decide early what stays in local storage versus what rides north.
When is snowbird season in the Coachella Valley?
Roughly October through May. Seasonal residents arrive as the summer heat breaks and leave before it returns, which makes October and April the two busiest moving months in Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Palm Springs. Move dates in those weeks go fast, so book two to three weeks out.
Most seasonal moves aren't a full household. They're a partial load — a few rooms of furniture, a golf cart, boxes of kitchen things — going into or out of a condo, a country-club home, or a storage unit that holds it all summer.
What should you sort out before move day?
The moves that go smoothly have this handled the week before:
- Certificate of insurance: most HOAs and management companies require one naming them — give us the building's requirements and we email it before move day
- Gate access: guard-gated communities need the mover's name and truck on the visitor list, or a code
- Elevator reservation: condo buildings often need a booked slot and a padded car
- Parking: tell us where a 26-foot truck can legally sit — some clubs restrict trucks to certain lanes or hours
- Key handoff: if you're not in town yet, a property manager, neighbor or lockbox lets us start without you
What stays in the desert and what goes north?
A local storage unit is usually cheaper than moving the same furniture two thousand miles twice a year. The pattern that works: the big pieces stay in the valley home or a climate-controlled unit; clothes, documents, medication and electronics travel with you; and anything you use in both places gets bought twice.
If you're moving the whole household north for good, that becomes a long-distance run — one flat quote, the same crew both ends.
Can movers work while you're still out of town?
Yes, and it's common. We coordinate with your property manager or a neighbor, send photos as we go, and place furniture from the plan you give us. Arrival-day moves are often booked from another state and finished before the owner's flight lands.
